Yay! It is finally 2024.
At Femme Fit Collective, we encourage our clients to not set new years resolutions. This may come as a surprise because we know that most gyms like to capitalize on resolutions. Yet, have you met anyone who really lost those 20 pounds and kept it off for the long term? Most likely not.
Our process is to sit with our clients and to work with them to find attainable health and fitness goals.
The statistics around resolutions are pretty stark. Most Americans by late January will have quit their resolutions. According to a study done by the University of Scranton, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only about 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals.
There are a lot of theories why resolutions really don’t work. I will definitely say that it has nothing to do with someone’s lack of will. There are many reasons why resolutions don’t work.
I am the type of person that loves a good end goal. I definitely like to set my own fitness and health goals in January. What this looks like for me is sitting down with a nice cup of cold brew and bringing my journal. I try to map out races and athletic endeavors that I want to participate in for the entire year. I try to do this sometime in early January. There is no hard deadline.
The way I do it is to break it down into 4 different categories:
1) Personal fitness goal
This is normally a raceI I want to do. Since I am a lifelong runner, this makes sense for my lifestyle. I already signed up for a 2024 race- Grand Teton Half Marathon here I come!
2) New activity to do with the kids or improve upon
Last year I wanted to get back into skiing so I could go with my kids. We got so into skiing we bought passes for the whole family. This year (2024) it is to do more tennis with the kids as it is my latest sport that I am loving.
3) Health related goal
My goal is to drink at least 3 smoothies weekly. I feel like when I drink smoothies regularly I feel better and my skin looks amazing. I am also excited about the prospect of finding some new healthy recipes.
4) Something fun that makes you happy
This year my goal is to read 55 books. I love reading. It is my second happy place next to running on trails. Last year, I read 54 so it is not too crazy of a goal.
When I look at this list, I get really excited to start the new year. That is my number one recommendation. Make sure you pick goals that make YOU happy. I also see how these goals can be a great jumping off spot to do activities for the long term.
